As we approach the deadline day of this term’s summer transfer window, Celtic have seemingly stepped up their efforts to reinforce their squad for the time being. But with no Champions League football, that is proving tougher than anticipated.
The Celts have already agreed on terms for the transfers of Joel van den Berg and Oliver Sorensen from PSV and Parma, respectively. They are also still navigating through a number of probable deals.
The transfer window for most of Europe’s top footballing nations is set to close tonight, whereas the deadline for Scottish clubs to add to their squad is set for Wednesday.
As a result, Celtic could be looking to get the majority of their deals done soon rather than letting it drag down to the Scottish deadline day.
Celtic set to sign experienced goalkeeper
Now, according to a recent report from journalist Anthony Joseph, Celtic have already agreed on terms with English Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers for a season-long deal for their goalkeeper, Sam Johnstone.
As per the report, Johnstone has already arrived at Celtic’s training facilities and will get through a medical before joining the rest of Martin O’Neill’s squad. The Hoops will also pay a significant amount of the English goalkeeper’s wages for the rest of the campaign.
Can Sam Johnstone fill in for Kasper Smchichel?
Johnstone’s addition brings in the required experience, which the Celts were seemingly missing since Kasper Schmeichel’s disastrous injury and ultimate retirement from professional football.
The 33-year-old brings a lot of experience with him following his career in the Premier League up until now. Johnstone is also expected to give the Celts’ current number one, Viljami Sinisalo, a run for his money during the remainder of the campaign.
It was highly unlikely for a club like the Hoops to go into the season with only two goalkeepers, and as mentioned earlier by Martin O’Neill, the club management has been looking for Schmeichel’s replacement for some time now.
It appears that the club have acquired that in the form of Johnstone, who was in a pretty bad situation himself, as the Wolves decided to bring in not one, but two goalkeepers during this transfer window in the form of Joao Virginia and John Ruddy.
Despite a brilliant start to the campaign for Wolves last season, Johnstone got sidelined due to a shoulder injury during the final phase of the 2025-26 campaign.
Now with only a move left to be officially announced by both clubs, it could be the perfect opportunity for the veteran goalkeeper to show his quality during this campaign with the Celts.
