McAvennie Slams Celtic Over Oasis Parkhead Booking on Lisbon Anniversary

Frank McAvennie Slams Celtic Over Oasis Parkhead Booking on Lisbon Anniversary

Frank McAvennie has criticised Celtic for allowing Oasis to play Celtic Park on the exact night the club marks 60 years since the Lisbon Lions’ European Cup win. The Frank McAvennie Celtic Oasis row broke after the former striker aired his frustration on the Let Me Be Frank podcast this week. Oasis are due on stage at Parkhead on May 25. That’s the same date Celtic beat Inter Milan in Lisbon back in 1967.

McAvennie, who played for Celtic under Billy McNeill, believes the club has let down the men who built its reputation. He says the anniversary deserved its own celebration. Rather than a night shared with a rock concert. Five Oasis shows are scheduled at Celtic Park in May as part of the band’s Live ’27 tour. One date lands directly on the anniversary itself.

Daily Record Interview Details McAvennie’s Criticism of Parkhead Chiefs

Speaking to the Daily Record, McAvennie did not hold back on his feelings about the scheduling clash.

It should mean everything to Celtic Football Club. But it obviously means nothing to Celtic. I’m really annoyed at that. I love Oasis, but they’ve got Oasis playing on the night of the 60th anniversary of the cup.

He questioned whether anyone at Parkhead had considered the wider picture before confirming the concert dates.

“Do they not read (the room)? Do the people running Celtic not have a clue what’s going on? They had a 50th at the Hydro. Rod Stewart did it. It was a brilliant night. They’ve got to have a 60th. Are they going to try and sell tickets somewhere else when Oasis is on?”

McAvennie pointed to Celtic’s own history for a better solution, insisting the club had other options open to it.

“Do you know what should have happened? They’ve got the stadium for five nights. What they should have done is said, ‘Look, you’re not getting it for the 25th because we’re going to have something for the anniversary. How about you guys playing. Like Rod Stewart did?'”

He suggested Oasis themselves might have welcomed a compromise. Given the band’s own ties to Celtic.

“Could they not have done something like that? Noel Gallagher is a big fan of Celtic. I’m sure Liam and the boys would’ve got behind it. Do Celtic not think about the fans anymore? Celtic Football Club is the Lisbon Lions. Let’s be honest about it. We’ve all played under great managers and won doubles and trebles. But the Lisbon Lions are what put Celtic on the map.”

The comments have stirred plenty of debate among supporters. Elsewhere on the site, supporters air baffling Parkhead scenarios about how the club could still mark the occasion properly.

Parkhead Concert Booking Conflicts With Lisbon Lions 60th Anniversary

May 25 marks 60 years since Celtic beat Inter Milan in Lisbon to become the first British club to win the European Cup. The win, delivered by Jock Stein’s Lisbon Lions under captain Billy McNeill, remains the defining moment in the club’s history.

McAvennie played under McNeill later in his own Celtic career. Giving him a direct link to the manager who built on that legacy. His frustration stems from a belief that Parkhead chiefs have overlooked the significance of the date when setting the stadium’s diary. For many supporters, the Frank McAvennie Celtic Oasis criticism reflects a wider worry. The club’s history has taken a back seat to commercial bookings.

Oasis Live ’27 Tour Schedule at Celtic Park Confirmed After Sell-Out

Oasis will play five nights at Celtic Park as part of their Live ’27 tour, with confirmed dates of May 21, 23, 25, 28 and 29. Tickets for all five shows sold out over the weekend. This underlines the scale of demand for the band’s return to Scotland.

The concerts will turn Parkhead into a live music venue for much of the closing week of May. The May 25 date is the one drawing McAvennie’s sharpest criticism. Celtic still have domestic matters to settle at Celtic Park before then. O’Neill seeking a response at Celtic Park remains a live topic for supporters this season.
